Everything is set for the most popular TV broadcast—The Super Bowl— where the San Francisco 49ers will bump into the Baltimore Ravens.
This year the price for the 30 second commercial hit a record high of 4 million. So, for all of us who are just going to tune in to see the hyped-up ads, what can we expect this year? Some of the big contenders who were able to land spots are Procter & Gamble with Tide, Mars with M&Ms, Kraft with MiO Fit which will feature comedian Tracy Morgan, Anheuser-Busch with the new Budweiser Black Crown, BudLight, and Beck’s Sapphire, Yum Brands with Taco bell, Mercedes-Benz USA. Other big ones will be Coca-Cola and of course Pepsi, who is in charge of the half-time show. They will have to keep up with our high expectations. Some of the most memorable ads in past Super Bowls have been by Volkswagen, Doritos and M&Ms.
Other companies, like Target, decided to pass on their Super Bowl spot and use that money to try to do something different. Instead of investing in the 30 second commercial spot, Target decided to use the money to develop Snack Bowl, a gaming mobile app based on the Super Bowl. The game is pretty basic, but personally takes the points for creativity.
The game is based on tossing a carousel of known Target brands like DiGiorno pizza and Coke Zero to jersey-wearing guests. The twist is that the guests are running around a living room and start moving faster, increasing difficulty, causing you to lose if you fail to feed three of your guests. You can share the game with your Facebook friends and challenge them to beat your score. As 2013 has been rumored to be the year of mobile applications, this might be a bold move made by Target. We will have to wait to see which will be the most buzzed-about ad or shared game after the Super Bowl. Who do you think will have the most memorable and vying ads this year?
