After years of trepidation, homebuyers are finally beginning to wade back into the housing market. But, as they do, many are making the surprising choice to hunt alone, rejecting the assistance of what’s known in real estate as a buyer’s agent.
For years, house-hunters have had the option to work with a real-estate agent who shows them properties and may ultimately negotiate the price as a counterbalance to the agent who represents the seller. But, now, fewer buyers are taking that option.
Of the buyers who purchased a property through a real-estate agent, just 57% had buyer representation, according to a 2010 report by the Nation...

Harder Than Ever to Afford Housing in Seattle

December 14, 2011

A new report from the Seattle Planning Commission finds that Seattle residents, particularly low-income residents, have more trouble than ever paying for housing, and—in the case of low-income families—can only afford to live here if housing is subsidized.

Significantly, the study found that although only about a third (35 percent) of all households spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing, about two-thirds of those who are very low-income (making 50 percent or less of the area’s median income, or about $29,500 for one person) or low-income (making up to 80 percent of median, or about $47,000 for one person) spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing.

Grand Central Apple Store is Grand

December 8, 2011

Apple employees in red t-shirts greeted Betabeat as we wandered around the open air Apple store that recently appeared on Grand Central Terminal’s East Balcony. ”Hi! How are you? Hi! Although the store opens Friday at 10 a.m., press were allowed to buy things. Judging by the number of iPhones out, we bet someone did, especially with all those helpful holiday Apple elves, who looked especially Christmas-y in the golden light of Grand Central.

The new Apple store boasts...
