Romney & Gingrich: The Draft Dodgers That Want to Send Your Kids to War
December 28, 2011
When it came time for Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich to serve in the armed forces during the Vietnam War in the 1960s, both Presidential candidates weaseled out of their duty to “serve their country”. Now they espouse hawkish rhetoric, vehemently back the occupation of Afghanistan, think it was a mistake to pull combat troops out of Iraq (a result of a Bush-era agreement with Iraq), and more recently have touted the need to invade Iran. Just as it’s easy to spend money that isn’t yours, it’s just as easy to send kids to war that aren’t your own. That’s the crux of what Mitt Romney and Gingrich have advocated and what they intend to do if either of them...
Federal judges reject challenge to Md. congressional districts
December 24, 2011
In an early Christmas present to Maryland’s Democratic leaders, a three-judge federal court has totally rejected all the arguments in a lawsuit challenging the state’s congressional district map passed and signed Oct. 20.
The court’s unusually rapid 55-page opinion, issued just three days after a hearing on the case, paves the way for Maryland to conduct its presidential primary election on April 3 as planned, with a filing deadline Jan. 11.
In the opinion written by Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Paul Neimeyer, the judges said the state did not racially discriminate in the drawing of the maps to dilute the black vote and did not violate the Voting Rights Act by failing to create...
Chinese Police Shut Down Christian Christmas Celebration
December 16, 2011
Chinese police and government officials scuffled with Christians and smashed sound equipment for a public Christmas celebration in an eastern village known for unofficial house churches and producing ornaments.
Christians in Xintan village said Friday that the officials wrecked a mixing console, turned over an electric piano and pushed and punched worshippers, injuring five, Tuesday night. A local official said the believers hit first, sending a deputy village head to the hospital.
“There were a few hundred of us. And the village heads were there too, and they were even more violent,” said Wang Jingfeng, on...
Newt Gingrich Pledges to Remain Faithful to Wife Callista
December 13, 2011
When the Iowa social conservative group The Family Leader unveiled a sweeping pledge on marriage and abortion over the summer, Newt Gingrich was one of the candidates who passed on signing it.
Now, Gingrich has answered the pledge with a lengthy written response, vowing to support a federal marriage amendment, reinstate the Mexico City policy — and, per the stipulations of The Family Leader pledge, to be faithful to his wife:
I also pledge to uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others.
Gingrich’s full response after the jump …
GOP Candidates Keep Courting Evangelical Voters
December 9, 2011
At a private gathering of pastors in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a contrite Newt Gingrich pitched his story of personal redemption Thursday.
Along South Carolina’s coast, Texas Gov. Rick Perry referenced Scripture as he worked to pump life into his floundering White House bid.
With the Republican presidential campaign hurtling toward the Jan. 3 leadoff Iowa caucuses, the two candidates are courting evangelicals with vigor.
And for good reason.
Christian conservatives who typically hold powerful sway in GOP primaries haven’t united behind any one candidate this year, though they have generally ...
Herman Cain’s Former Rivals Go After His Supporters
December 6, 2011
A day after Herman Cain shuttered his Republican candidacy for president, struggling GOP hopefuls looked to pick up the fallen candidate’s tea party following and upset a primary dynamic that has pushed Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich to the forefront.
Reps. Ron Paul of Texas and Michele Bachmann of Minnesota said Sunday they expected Cain supporters would fall in line behind them because of their messages on limited government, despite their low standing in the polls. Meanwhile, last-place rival Rick Santorum predicted he now had a good chance of winning the Iowa caucus.
While such brazen predictions are likely overstated, the 11th-hour press comes at a crucial ti...
US Senate Approves Vast Spending Bill for Military
December 2, 2011
The US Senate approved a vast military spending bill that tied strings to military aid to Pakistan and aimed to stem the spread of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles from Libya.
The $662 billion annual Defense Authorization legislation also included a murky compromise on the issue of whether the US government may hold suspected terrorists, including American citizens, indefinitely without trial.
The bill, which sailed to passage by a lopsided 93-7 margin, included tough new sanctions aimed at cutting off Iran’s central bank from the global financial system in a bid to force Tehran to halt its alleged nuclear program.
Herman Cain Acknowledges Accusations Have Hurt Campaign
November 29, 2011
Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain acknowledges slipping from the top tier of candidates while addressing accusations of sexual harassment and confusion about his policy stands.
The Georgia businessman insists his campaign is sound and supporters remain onboard what he calls the “Cain train.”
Cain has denied the accusations and says “nothing has gone wrong” in terms of the campaign’s mechanics. But he tells CNN’s “State of the Union” that some people “are heavily influenced by perception more so than reality.”
Cain also says he supports “targeted identification” in weeding out poten...
Obama Criticized for Leaving God Out of Thanksgiving Address
November 25, 2011
President Obama devoted his weekly radio address to thanking U.S. service members and volunteers at shelters and soup kitchens. But it’s whom he didn’t thank that caused a stir on Twitter: God.
“We’re especially grateful for the Americans who defend our country overseas,” Obama said in his Thanksgiving Day address. “To all the service members eating Thanksgiving dinner far from your families, the American people are thinking of you today.”
According to the White House, Obama personally called 10 service members in Iraq and Afghanistan on Thursday to say happy ...
Intellectual Property Rights Law Important for Pakistani Businesses
November 23, 2011
Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) of Pakistan
As a result, Pakistan continues to rank poorly in international indices when it comes to IRP and patents protection as well as copyright piracy. One highly affected segment of the economy is the technology sector where success and profitability depend on being able to protect one’s inventions.
To address these issues, back in April 2009, CIPE in partnership with thePakistan Software Houses Association for IT & ITES (P@SHA) organized a roundtable on “Digital Intellectual Property Rights Issues and Their I...
