In a new report, the Federation for American Immigration Reform is blaming the overpopulation of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and the resulting environmental destruction, on the influx of immigrants coming into the area

The group, which began in 1979, is dedicated to preventing population growth through mass immigration. In a report it released last month, the group, citing U.S. Census data, claimed th...

Israel approves harsher penalties for illegal migrants

January 19, 2012

Israel’s parliament has approved a bill that would make it possible to imprison illegal migrants for life over property crimes and detain them for up to three years without trial, AP reports.

The harsh penalties are aimed at trying to stanch a flood of illegal immigration from Africa. Critics say the new law is unconstitutional and tramples human rights.

Anyone caught helping migrants could face prison terms of up to 15 years.

The government estimates 50,000 Africans have illegally entered Israel since 2006. It says most seek a more comfortable life and are not fleeing persecution.

The influx has touched off a national debate. Some Israelis say the migrants are a burden and dilute Israel&#...

Impact of Illegal Immigration

January 10, 2012

Immigration has become a hot political issue in the USA as republican politicians pressurise the administration to tighten up on illegal USimmigration while many democrats argue for an amnesty on illegal immigrants. Some people prefer to have changes in immigration law that would allow illegal immigrants to stay legally so that the taxes paid by newly legalized residents could be used to fund public services such as education and health care. According to the Pew Hispanic Center report, illegal immigrants to US are mainly individuals who have entered the US without the necessary documents or who have overstayed temporary visas.

U.S. Supreme Court To Rule On Arizona’s Controversial Immigration Law

January 5, 2012

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday to rule on Arizona’s controversial law targeting illegal immigrants.

The justices said they will review a federal appeals court ruling that blocked several tough provisions in the Arizona law. One of those requires that police, while enforcing other laws, question a person’s immigration status if officers suspect that they are in the country illegally.

The Obama administration challenged the Arizona law by arguing that regulating immigration is the job of the federal government, not states. Similar laws in Alabama, South Carolina and Utah also are facing administration lawsuits. Private groups are suing over im...

Individual States’ Spending on Homeland Security – Where Does Your State Rank?

December 30, 2011

I’m not terribly surprised at the top three on this list, though four and five I find mildly surprising (although upon reflection they make sense).

Also, as somebody who spent years there, I find it unsurprising yet curious that New Mexico is the one southern border state without intensive focus on homeland security; unsurprising because there aren’t many people there, it actually shares very little of the border with Mexico,  its status as a bilingual and primarily Hispanic state point to a relative lack of xenophobia compared to Arizona, and its budget issues. At the same time, it’s mildly curious to me that immigration opponents at the national level haven’t used d...

Americans Can be Transferred to Foreign Prisons Under NDAA

December 24, 2011

If you thought the clause in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which now allows for the indefinite detention of American citizens, was the most egregious violation of your Constitutional rights, think again. A section of the NDAA that isn’t receiving the much due attention it rightfully should is even more dangerous and far more detrimental to your basic civil liberties. Section 1021 of the NDAA would give the President authority to “detain” and “transfer” an American citizen to a foreign country or regime,

DISPOSITION UNDER LAW OF WAR.—The disposition of a person under the law of war as described in subsection (a) may include the following:
