How to Become a Successful Poet

January 20, 2012

Making a good living in the poetry genre is hard. However, it is not completely impossible. Here are some steps to show you how.

Steps

1. Read many different poems. Try to find out what has already been written, and NEVER copy ideas or stanzas.

2. Take inspiration from everywhere. Many poets take inspiration from nature, people, or events.

3. Listen to lots of music. It doesn’t have to have lyrics. Decide what genres you like and listen to a wide variety of artists.

4. Keep a “poetry journal”. Carry it everywhere you go, so that if you come up with a poem or idea, you can jot it down.

5. Keep a thesaurus handy. If you want to use a word...

Movie Marketing Madness: The Iron Lady

January 9, 2012

I was only tangentially aware of politics for much of the 1980s. I was six when the decade started and 16 when it ended so of course I knew what was going on but didn’t really have a big stake in the comings and goings of various politicians. My most stark memories of that decade’s politics are a mix of the serious (Ronald Reagan being shot) and the comedic (Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz doing George Bush and Michael Dukakis on “Saturday Night Live”) with a few other things mixed in here and there. In terms of international politics my awareness was even fuzzier. I knew Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of Great Britain and knew what a big deal that was in terms of both gen...

Movie Marketing Madness: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

January 3, 2012

There’s always risk when you launch something new. There’s the oft-cited statistic that X number of all new restaurants that open are closed within a year and similar figures can likely be found for any category of business or other venture. While you can say the same about movies – that this or that percentage are going to bomb each month/year – there are even bigger risks involved when you’re discussing the launch of a potential franchise. Especially one that’s already proved to be popular in another medium.

Such was the case 10 years ago when Warner Bros. launched the first Harry Potter movie based on the first entry in the popular book series. If it had bombed – and we can look to adaptations o...

‘Courageous’ Becomes Top-Grossing Film Made by Sherwood Church

December 22, 2011

The church-made film “Courageous” has become the top-grossing film by Sherwood Baptist Church, passing its previous top film, “Fireproof.”
Courageous passed Fireproof on Saturday (Dec. 17) and finished the weekend with enough to push it to $33.5 million in total gross, bettering Fireproof’s $33.45 million. It is playing in fewer than 100 theaters and comes out on DVD Jan. 17.

The weekend’s receipts means that each film by Sherwood Baptist Church has grossed more than its predecessor. The church — which gets only a portion of the total gross — also made the 2006 film “Facing ...
