Individual States’ Spending on Homeland Security – Where Does Your State Rank?

December 30, 2011

I’m not terribly surprised at the top three on this list, though four and five I find mildly surprising (although upon reflection they make sense).

Also, as somebody who spent years there, I find it unsurprising yet curious that New Mexico is the one southern border state without intensive focus on homeland security; unsurprising because there aren’t many people there, it actually shares very little of the border with Mexico,  its status as a bilingual and primarily Hispanic state point to a relative lack of xenophobia compared to Arizona, and its budget issues. At the same time, it’s mildly curious to me that immigration opponents at the national level haven’t used d...

Over 1 Million Have Made Visits to New York’s 9/11 Memorial

December 30, 2011

In the 16 weeks since it opened to the public, the September 11 Memorial in New York has seen more than 1 million visitors, officials announced Thursday.
The memorial plaza was opened to family members of victims on the 10th anniversary of the attacks, and to the general pubic the following day.

A museum on site is still under construction, and it is expected to open September 11, 2012.

Designed by architect Michael Arad, the memorial features two huge, square fountains that mark the footprints of the World Trade Center towers.

The fountains’ water flows into granite reflecting pools at the center of the 8-acre, tree-li...

Mitsubishi To Launch New Pajero In India Before March End

December 30, 2011

The next-generation Pajero is expected to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2012. Mitsubishi had initially planned to launch this all-new SUV at the Auto Expo in January. However, the plans had to be rescheduled due to disruptions caused by unexpected floods in Thailand. Mr. Manoj Jha, Managing Director of Hindustan Motors (HM), which makes and markets Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s range of vehicles here in India, said, “We had decided to launch Pajero as well as new variants from the HM stable at the Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi. However, some dislocation of operat...

Are Smart Phones The Cigarettes Of The Next Century?

December 29, 2011

Ten years ago we hadn’t heard of smart phones, but in the way that a new fashion craze sweeps through the population, they have rapidly made their way into our pockets, handbags and palms. These days, mobile internet means much more than connecting a laptop with a dongle. At the turn of the last century, it was all about style, fashion and jazz and the new, must-h...

The Only Republican Who Understands The Real Issues

December 29, 2011

President Obama has already shown his unwillingness to do the things we must do to fix our country, and our two party system means the only viable alternative will likely come from the Republican Party. Unfortunately, all of the big names in the Republican primaries are either ignoring the big issues, or are on the wrong side of them.

The U.S. currently has a massive trade deficit that is costing American jobs, but this has scarcely been mentioned in the debates. This deficit is fueled by our misguided free trade policies, but the mainstream candidates are not talking about getting out of the free trade agreements that are shipping our jobs overseas. Many of...

‘Mission: Impossible’ Wins Sluggish Christmas Box Office with $26.5M

December 29, 2011

Tom Cruise’s latest mission has won a holiday weekend that’s shaping up with some silent nights at movie theaters as business continues to lag.
Studio estimates Sunday placed Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” a solid No. 1 with $26.5 million domestically over its first weekend in full release. The movie raised its total to $59 million since it started a week earlier in huge-screen cinemas and expanded nationwide last Wednesday, and distributor Paramount estimated that revenues will reach $72.7 million by Monday.

Cruise’s fourth “Mission”...

Android Tablet to be Ready in 6 Months?

December 28, 2011

Soon Google could show tablet makers like ASUS, HTC, Lenovo, and Motorola how a real Android tablet is made.
During an interview with an Italian newspaper this week, Eric Schmidt, Google’s Executive Chairman, mentioned plans “to market a tablet of the highest quality”.

The idea sounds similar to Google’s Nexus line of smartphones.

Google typically helms the designs of those devices, and the final products are usually treated as the ideal pairing of hardware with Android software.

Though the often-talkative Schmidt says little else along the lines of confirmed plans, he does give the tablet a six month window....

Anonymous Tips Solve Crimes Especially Through Social Media

December 28, 2011

There was a story last week over at the Maine Public Broadcasting Network that detailed the way police in Maine are using anonymous tips to solve crimes in their communities. From the story:

“We’ve gotten tips on things like homicides all the way down to panhandlers bothering people,” says Portland Police Commander Vern Malloch. His department allows people to text anonymous tips to police. Malloch says that thousands of tips have come through Text-A-Tip more than a year after the program started.

“It’s helped us solve other crimes, like burglaries and things like that,” he says. “Folks provide the information but don...

Planning Commission to craft “advisory” on YMCA camp deal

December 28, 2011

TODAY: Are Charlestown taxpayers about to be ripped off?

Tonight, at its Wednesday, December 28 meeting, the Charlestown Planning Commission is scheduled to take up the task of crafting an“advisory” opinion for the Town Council on the proposed $475,000+ town purchase of the derelict YMCA camp on Watchaug Pond.
This camp had been proposed as the site for a beautifully designed conservation development, but NIMBY opposition killed that idea. Instead, the YMCA proposes to sell the land to the town. But the town will not get to own it.
Tax dollars will buy the land, but the private Charlestown Land Trust will take title to it (though the town will pay for its maintenance). The principal beneficiary will be the So...

Best SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) Tools

December 28, 2011

In managing your network environment it is important to have sufficient tool set for the task. Oftentimes, the tool set that is provided you may fall short of giving your sufficient information and insight into the nature of a task. This article will list some of the best SNMP tools.

SMNP Graph is an excellent tool for gathering real-time node data and transcribing this data to a graph for specific SNMP IP nodes. This is also a useful tool for obtaining MIB node info including syntax, OID, node properties and descriptions. If you are aware of the MIB node but are unable to determine the OID and/or it’s properties MIB Viewer is great in this situation. You can either input the node name or the OID and receive full information on the MIB node. This tool will allow you to obtain a variety of information on the MIB including: general information, attributes, amount of nodes, TCs, as well as defined traps. When d...
