Korea Turns to South Africa for Corn as U.S. Prices Double on Ethanol Use

May 31, 2011

South Korea, the biggest corn importer in Asia after Japan, is buying more from South Africa after U.S. prices doubled in the past year.

The country imported 401,070 metric tons of South African corn for livestock feed in the first four months, data on the website of the Korea International Trade Association show. That compares with the 208,866 tons shipped in all of 2010.

Corn in Chicago climbed in April to the highest level since the global food crisis in 2008 as demand for feed and ethanol outpaced production. That helped push world food costs to a record in February, the United Nations estimates, spurring conflict and riots in North Africa and Middle East and driving 44 million people into poverty. Rabobank International says U.S. predictions for the corn harvest this year are optimistic because of poor weather and planting conditions.

“Importers purchased South African corn because it was more competitive than U.S. grain...

Mark Zuckerberg Wants Kids Under 13 to Join Facebook, Uses Bogus Excuse to Explain Why They Can’t

May 27, 2011

There’s a lot of confusion about the 3 main laws — COPPA, CIPA, and FERPA — that govern children’s and students’ online privacy. Confusion about FERPA makes schools reluctant to share information about students’ progress or problems. Confusion about CIPA leads schools to utilize unnecessary Internet filters. And confusion about COPPA lets people like Mark Zuckerberg get away with making inaccurate statements about why Facebook doesn’t allow those under 13 from joining the site.

At the NewSchools Venture Summit this week, Zuckerberg purportedly said that he would like to see those under 13 join Facebook. I wasn’t there, so let me just quote Forbes‘ take on the CEO’s talk:

“Zuckerberg said he wants younger kids to be allowed on social networking sites like Facebook. Currently, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) mandates that websites that collect information about users (like Facebook does) aren’t allowed to sign on anyone under...

What’s Holding Back the Korean Reunification?

May 26, 2011

Is a US Withdrawal in Korea Possible by 2012?

In June of the year 2000, South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung traveled to Pyongyang in North Korea for a three day summit with DPRK leader Kim Jong-Il, the first top level meeting between the two countries since the Korean War in the 1950’s. Symbolic and inspiring hope across both countries, the meeting produced a thaw in relations between the two governments that many saw as a turning point, portending better relations and progress towards the reunification of the two countries. At the summit, Kim Jong-Il promised to repay the favor of the South by visiting Seoul in the same manner that Kim Dae-Jung had traveled to the North. Over 8 years later, the reclusive North Korean leader has still not fulfilled his promise, and few additional steps have been taken towards reunification. The DPRK successfully detonated a nuclear weapon in 2006, and has been involved in a long term negotiation process with the US, China, Japan, and the Sou...

Gingerbread Update for Motorola Devices Will Fix Up Exchange Activesync Issues

May 25, 2011

According to the grapevine, some Droid Pro and Droid 2 Global users are facing trouble with corporate sync and have posted their queries in the Motorola Support forums for help. In one of such forums a Motorola employee to deal with the current issues with Exchange Activesync, commented that the trouble will be solved with the impending Gingerbread update for both these handsets. He also confirmed that the Droid X will be integrated as well.

Considering how the Droid X software testing program was made accessible for some users, they might be the first to get the 2.3 update sometime by the end of the second quarter. This will be applicable for the Droid 2/Global and Pro devices as well. According to Droid-Life, they have said that Motorola has all but accomplished their Gingerbread builds for all these devices and is just waiting on confirmation from Verizon to approve and set them free....

Grocery Tips for Consumers

May 25, 2011

You know those instances when you head to the grocery store to buy a specific number of things but instead end up spending a lot more than you expected on things that you had no plans of getting?

It happens to everybody. We go to the supermarket, believing that we will only be spending amount of dollars and then, before you know, we are picking up all sorts of small items from the shelves. The things we need to buy are clear in our heads, but we end up stuffing our carts with all sorts of things that we did not intend to buy or sometimes do not even need.

The next thing you know, we are at the check-out counter and we are absolutely aghast at how much we have to pay. At that time, of course, there nothing more we can do about it but pay the cashier. Then we think to ourselves, that is the last time I am going to spend more than what I planned at the grocery story. But the next time we are back there, we do the same thing all over again. Its like we have no control of ours...
