Blogging For Business:

They all seem easy enough, but when it comes to measuring your success after the effort most will be left disheartened.
The question that irks skilled photographers more than any other: “Wow, that’s a beautiful picture, what kind of camera did you use?”The question that irks skilled photographers more than any other: “Wow, that’s a beautiful picture, what kind of camera did you use?”
Home Valuation Code of Conduct
April 28, 2011
Never before has a change in the housing industry impacted so many participants and caused unsettling debate. The Home Valuation Code of Conduct ( HVCC), is the result of a joint agreement between the Agencies’ Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Federal Housing Finance Agency, and New York state attorney general Andrew Cuomo, to improve the quality and accuracy of the appraisal process. While the intent was great – protections for homebuyers, mortgage investors and the housing market – honest industry participants and homeowners are being punished in an effort to thwart the efforts of the bad apples that created our current housing challenges.
History of HVCC
In a 2008 announcement, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae stated they would no longer purchase mortgages from sellers that do not adopt the HVCC effective May 1, 2009. Since FannieMae and Freddie Mac purchase 85% of all mortgages being originated today, this is a significant policy that changed property valuation processe...
Stock Markets Soar to nearly Three Year High
April 28, 2011
WASHINGTON – Stock markets in the United States ended the week (markets are closed April 22 in observance of Good Friday) near a 3-year high as they continued a climb begun nearly two full years ago.
According to CNNMoney.com, the Dow Jones closed at 12,506 points, its highest level since June 2008. The gains from Thursday were kept in check by some less-than thrilling corporate earnings results, but the upward trend was easily maintained.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average has more than doubled since hitting its low point in March 2009. The other major indexes have seen virtually the same increases. These equate to market capitalization gains of hundreds of billions of dollars for Wall Street and its listed companies.
The stock market growth has not been met with comparable growth in any other economic sectors. One of the largest growth sectors since the collapse in 2008 and 2009 has been the banking industry. Big banks in the United States never ceased their ...
How one firm grew Assets Under Management 40% over the last year
April 28, 2011
One Asset Management firm increased their Assets Under Management (‘AUM’) by 40% between March 31, 2009 and April 2010. So what firm is posting such strong growth and what factors contributed to their success?
Background:
On March 31 of last year BB&T Asset Management had $2.2 billion of long-term mutual fund assets under management; by the end of April 2010 it had $3.1 billion, a growth rate over 40%. Increasing their mutual fund assets under management by such an impressive amount shows that besides strong performance returns, there are other ways to increase AUM.
Insight:
Recently profiled in an OnWallStreet article, “BB&T Mutual Fund Family Posts Huge Growth“, the director of distribution at BB&T Asset Management, Tony DeLucia, noted some factors that contributed to his firm’s success. In fact, there were two main contributors to the strong AUM growth:
•Increased consultant relationships, helping BB&T sell into Inst...
The Beat Goes On: ICE Begins Second Round of Deportations to Haiti During Humanitarian Crisis
April 28, 2011
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security has resumed deportations of Haitian nationals. On a conference call this morning, U.S. officials confirmed that they have received no assurances that the 19 individuals who were deported will be treated humanely upon their arrival in Haiti. In response, the Center for Constitutional Rights, University of Miami School of Law Human Rights Clinic and Immigration Clinic, FANM/Haitian Women of Miami, Alternative Chance, and Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center issued the following statement:
This morning, the United States deported a second group of Haitian men to face jail and death in post-earthquake Haiti. In January, a 34-year-old man, Wildrick Guerrier, died only 9 days after being deported to Haiti. Guerrier and 26 other men were jailed without being provided with clean water or food and were held in a cell covered with human feces and vomit. Guerrier and other men fell ill, e...
Failure of Imagination
April 28, 2011
After I’d finished writing the piece that’s at National Review Online today about the anti-climactic denouement of the open-borders smear campaign against immigration skeptics, it occurred to me that the whole sordid affair was the result of the other side’s lack of imagination or empathy.
The goal of the campaign — the high point of which was the Southern Poverty Law Center’s bogus designation of one of the national restrictionist organizations as a “hate group” — was to drive all immigration skeptics out of the public debate by labeling any skepticism about immigration as inherently racist. In other words, to make questioning mass immigration the same as questioning the desegregation of lunch counters. The smear campaign was developed at a series of meetings after the defeat of the 2007 amnesty out of despair at having failed so completely despite their holding the commanding heights of society and economy and politics. While I’m...
Amazon Announces Kindle Library Lending
April 25, 2011
I had a feeling this would come eventually: Amazon announces library lending for the Kindle. Over 11,000 libraries are going to be linked to the Kindle universe “later this year” and according to the press release:
Customers will be able to check out a Kindle book from their local library and start reading on any Kindle device or free Kindle app for Android, iPad, iPod touch, iPhone, PC, Mac, BlackBerry, or Windows Phone. If a Kindle book is checked out again or that book is purchased from Amazon, all of a customer’s annotations and bookmarks will be preserved.
“We’re doing a little something extra here,” Marine continued. “Normally, making margin notes in library books is a big no-no. But we’re extending our Whispersync technology so that you can highlight and add margin notes to Kindle books you check o...
Author Amber Benson reading from Serpent’s Storm
April 25, 2011
So I stumbled across a link to this video on Twitter a couple of weeks ago and it had me laughing so much that I ordered all 3 books in author Amber Benson’s Calliope Reaper-Jones series. The reading is from Serpent’s Storm (the third book in the series) and be warned it does contain adult only content. It’s hilarious watching Amber trying to keep a straight face when reading one of the more naughty scenes from the book – I guess that is one of the hazards of writing books for adults. I did share the link on Twitter but had to post it here in case any of you missed it. If you’d like to find out more about the series you can check out Amber Benson’s website here.
